Kaliya Dalan – Lord Krishna Subduing the Serpent Kaliya
This beautiful Odisha Pattachitra painting depicts the famous episode of Kaliya Dalan (Kaliya Mardan) from the life of Lord Krishna. Lord Krishna is portrayed gracefully dancing upon the hood of the mighty serpent Kaliya, symbolising the triumph of divine power over arrogance, evil and negativity.
The Nagapatnis (wives of Kaliya) are shown on either side with folded hands, praying to Lord Krishna for mercy and forgiveness. The water below represents the Yamuna River, where the poisonous serpent Kaliya resided.
